Fun, Interesting and Random Hair Facts – Post #1

Did you know that hair is the fastest growing tissue in your body or that hair can absorb its weight in water?  My guess is that you didn’t know that and I’m assuming you’ll never need to, but hair gurus like us at Ovation think facts like these are kind of cool!  In fact, there are so many cool and interesting hair facts out there that I’ve broken up this post into two parts.

While today’s Hair Fun Facts Post #1 may not fill you with a ton of useful information on hair health, it may provide a little entertainment and/or some fun conversation starters. Check them out:

• The average person has between 100,000 and 150,000 strands of hair on their head.
• A natural blonde usually has more hair strands then dark or red hair. Towheads generally have 120,000 strands; brown/black-haired people 100,000 strands, and redheads average about 80,000 strands.
• Hair is the fastest growing tissue in the body. The only thing that grows faster is bone marrow.
• Everybody sheds between 40-150 strands of hair per day.
• Hair is made up of mostly keratin, which our outer layer of skin and fingernails are made out of.  In animals, horns, hooves, claws, feathers, beaks, quills (porcupines), and baleen (whales) are all also made of keratin.
• On an average adult scalp, 25 meters of hair fiber is produced every day.
• At any random time, 90% of the hair on a head is in a growing phase, while the other 10% is in a resting phase.
• Hair can absorb its weight in water.

• Hair turns grey as a result of the pigment cells in the hair follicle not working properly. The hair bulb slows melanin production as a result of age or stress.
• A whole head of hair could support up to 2 tons.
• The length of the growing phase of hair shortens as you age.
• When you are born, you have about 1000 hair follicles per square centimeter. This number drops as you age.

Today’s Healthy Hair Tip: Use a Wide Tooth Comb for Thicker Hair
Making the switch to a wide tooth comb from your everyday brush seems a little weird, right? There are a lot of people that think they serve two entirely different purposes. The fact is, they don’t and making that simple change can have huge benefits.  Brushing your hair, especially vigorous brushing or with harsh bristle brushes can literally rip your hair apart.  Not only does this break pieces off, it pulls healthy strands completely out, especially when the hair is wet. Over time this leaves your hair weak and lifeless.

Using a wide tooth comb gently detangles the hair so it decreases breakage and shedding which will keep your hair strong.  Strong hair strands are thicker, creating an overall fuller head of hair. Sounds easy for some, but I know that using a comb like this won’t work for everyone every day.  If you have a hair type where a wide tooth comb isn’t ideal for primary use, consider working it into your hair routine in some way.  Decreasing brush use to a few times a week can make a difference.  Remember it’s really important to be gentle; patience is the key to avoid breakage while detangling your hair.  The best thing about today’s tip is that wide tooth combs are inexpensive.  Even the best brands are under $5 so it’s at least worth giving it a try.

Holiday Party Hairstyles you can do at Home

Holiday parties are one of the reasons I love this time of year.  Maybe it’s the holiday music, the comfort food, or the spiked eggnog that brings out the happy in all of us.  Whether your fellow-party goers are friends, family, or co-workers, occasions like these are a great excuse to go glam.  Holiday parties are one of the few times a year that it’s completely appropriate to pull out that sequin covered dress or sparkly stilettos.  They are also one of the only times that most adults get a reason to rock an up-do or other formal hair style.  While this fun and great, it’s also precisely why some of us don’t even know where to start.

As much as I’d love to have my hair professionally done for special occasions like holiday parties, it’s usually hard to make that happen.  This means that by doing it on my own, I need not only inspiration and help deciding on a do, but also a step-by-step instruction guide on how to create it.

It’s times like these that I turn to Pinterest.  Pinterest is a huge source of inspiration and ideas for up-dos and DIY hair styles.  The Ovation Pinterest page of course has several hair related boards, but one in particular is great if you’re looking for hair tutorials.  We’ve put together a board of “Hair How-Tos” that include classy, formal hairstyles, perfect for occasions like a holiday party, but are easy enough to do at home on your own and in under an hour. Whether you’re looking to wear your hair down, up, or somewhere in-between our board includes ideas that are sure to make your decision and holiday party hair prep a bit easier.

Here are some of my favorites from our Hair How To Board -

Vintage Waves – The vintage wave look is definitely a popular one and is a great way to curl your hair in maybe a different way than you normally do.  Because it is a different curl, I recommend a trial run, just so you know that it works on your hair type.  By the time your holiday parties come around, you’ll be able to pull it off in no time. Vintage waves works really well with cocktail attire and vintage accessories making it a brilliant look for winter parties.

Mini Twisted Buns – The best part about the mini bun look is that there is no exact way to create them.  I personally like the fact that that the style is intended to look a bit messy, meaning you can mess it up and pull it off all at the same time! It’s great for hair of all types and lengths and is the easiest of the styles mentioned.

Braided Halo – For longer hair styles, the braided halo is a beautiful style for dressy occasions. There are several ways to create the halo, but each is classy, polished and hip.  Braids in any form are trendy so if your hair isn’t long enough for a halo, you can always wrap a braid around a bun or add braided strands to an elegant ponytail.

No-Tease Bouffant – This bouffant tutorial is one of my favorites on Pinterest because I love any tip to help add volume without hair teasing.  This voluminous bouffant looks pretty as it’s shown on our board (worn half down), but also would look great with a ponytail or bun.

Another way to take your hair from “everyday” to “holiday” is to add a festive hair accessory.  A shiny or sparkly headpiece, headband or decorated bobby pins adds holiday cheer and makes whatever style you choose more sophisticated.  If the above dos aren’t for you, check out the entire board and Ovation Pinterest page for additional ideas, inspiration and just plain pretty hair!

Five Things You Can Do Every Day for Healthier Hair

Improving the health of your hair is definitely not something you can do overnight.  It is a process that takes time, patience and dedication.  For a results oriented person like me, this can be discouraging and with all the different ways to improve hair health, I get a bit overwhelmed.  If you’re at all like me, you may think to yourself, “Where do I even begin?”

One way is to start small, so I found five easy and most importantly doable steps you can take on a daily basis to improve and maintain your hair health.

Drink lots of water – Everyone knows that drinking lots of water is necessary for overall health, but many don’t realize how important water is for you hair.  Each strand of hair is made up of about 25% water.  The body and scalp need that water to keep the hair shaft moisturized.  Each person needs 8-10 8oz glasses of water every day and even more if you drink coffee, alcohol or work out.  Think about this next time you want to skip out on the water…hydrated hair is healthy hair!

Many clients are pleased with the way Ovation Cell Therapy has made their hair healthier, thicker, stronger, and longer, but most don’t know exactly why it does what it does.
First, let’s clear up a few things. Ovation’s Cell Therapy is not a shampoo and it’s not a conditioner.  It is a hair treatment.  And because our whole lives we’ve been taught to just wash and condition our hair, many people get confused about what a hair treatment is.  Once you find out, and start using Ovation, it really will change the way you think about your hair care routine.

On a basic level, I like to think of Cell Therapy as a vitamin for hair.  Much like taking a vitamin or eating nutrients that hair needs, by using Cell Therapy you’re applying those nutrients directly onto the hair and scalp.  The scalp is the environment in which the hair develops and lives, so its health is vital for healthy hair growth and maintenance.  Adding a vitamin to the scalp and hair strands can not only promote healthy hair, but can also wake up dormant cells.  The Cell Therapy does exactly that, rejuvenates dormant hair follicles to encourage natural, healthy growth.
How exactly does it do that?

Normal hair has three layers: the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla. The cuticle is the outer layer and is comprised primarily of keratin (protein) scales that overlap slightly. Hair in good condition has a relatively flat cuticle making it shiny, smooth, manageable, and even fuller.  Cuticles that are in bad condition are broken, dull, and weak. One thing that makes Cell Therapy work so well is protein. Adding protein to a damaged cuticle can repair it by attaching to the keratin and filling in the damaged spots.  It then creates a smooth, protected layer which both looks great and protects against future damage.

Cell Therapy also works to stimulate circulation in the scalp.  The act of massaging the product in alone encourages healthy blood flow.  By optimizing blood flow, you encourage not only healthier hair growth, but also can increase the rate of growth.

Advanced Crème Rinse – Many people think that our Crème Rinse is a conditioner, but it’s not.  It’s a moisturizer. It doesn’t contain any oils that can coat the hair and weigh it down.  Some conditioners contain silicones that leave your hair feeling smooth, but they aren’t actually making the hair strand healthy. Our Crème Rinse contains vegetal proteins and other emollients to that create both a healthy and smooth cuticle.

Tips to avoid hair breakage – Thicker Hair is Possible!

Hair breakage happens to the best of us and unfortunately, it’s pretty much unavoidable. Breakage is what can make hair feel coarse and dry, and when really bad, unhealthy and thin.

There is good news though; you can significantly reduce hair breakage by taking these simple steps.

Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet – When your hair is soaking wet, it’s at its weakest state. Vigorously brushing through wet hair will most definitely cause strands to break.  The best thing is to wait until it’s dry or at least drier.  If you can’t wait, gently use a wide-tooth comb to de-tangle it instead of a brush.  In general, being a little more gentle on your hair can make a big different in the amount of breakage you experience.

Avoid heat styling as much as possible – It is best to avoid heat styling completely, but that would be near impossible for many of us.  Even blow drying for less time or decreasing the use of curling and flat irons a few days a week will help. Another way to avoid heat damage and breakage is to use a thermal or heat protection spray everyday and especially before styling.

Trim your hair regularly – Although you can decrease the amount of split ends, they are inevitable. Once you have them, the only way to get rid of them and the best way to prevent further damage, is to trim them off.   A split end can work its way up the hair strand making it weak and the hair will eventually break off.

Avoid tight hairstyles- Tight hairstyles like ponytails and buns can pull the hair a bit too much, causing it to break. Tight braids, extensions, and other longer-term styles are especially damaging.

Take supplements – Taking a multivitamin will help the body get what it needs to stay healthy, which is the best thing for your hair.  When the body is healthy, new growth of hair is too and healthy strong hair doesn’t break as much.

Invest in a great shampoo – Purchase a shampoo that contains vitamins, minerals and natural ingredients.  These nutrients can keep the hair strong and healthy and remove damaging build-up. Sulfate free shampoos are best because they clean your hair without removing oils that your scalp needs.

Decreasing hair breakage can have a great effect on the look and feel of your hair!  It will not only look healthier, but it will be thicker, shinier and much more manageable…and who doesn’t want that?!?

As I started to think about how to avoid breakage, I realized I need to show my hair a little more love in general. From being gentle when towel drying and brushing to loosening my top knot, a little love can go a long way.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), a month where organizations, businesses, individuals and other breast cancer supporters come together for one great cause: to spread awareness, raise funds, and educate the masses all in the name of breast cancer.  For over 25 years, NBCAM has been successful in raising awareness of breast cancer. It’s because of collaborations like the NBCAM, that so many breast cancer survivors have thrived and that groundbreaking discoveries are being made in cancer research every day.

We are extremely honored to participate in this year’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with our Pink bottle fundraising efforts and involvement in the San Diego Komen Race for the Cure.  At Ovation, we take pride in helping to restore the confidence and femininity of Cancer survivors with our products and by supporting organizations like Rady Childrens’ Hospital and Susan G. Komen.

I just love hair accessories! You know those days when you don’t even know where to start when it comes to styling your hair? What Foods to Eat For Thicker, Stronger, Longer Hair

What if you were told that you could have thicker, stronger, longer hair by adding brussels sprouts and liver to your daily diet…would you do it? While both of these actually do promote healthy hair, even those who really want to improve their hair might not think it’s worth it.

Fortunately for non-liver-lovers like me, there are plenty of both healthy and delicious foods that support the overall health of our hair.  Whether you’re already eating these foods or not, it’s good to know which ones are said to specifically promote thicker, stronger, and longer hair.

Thicker Hair – Halibut, strawberries, raspberries, swiss chard, carrots, onions, cauliflower, and cucumber.
These foods contain biotin which is said to increase the hair’s elasticity and prevent breakage.

Stronger Hair – Fortified whole-grain cereals, nuts, egg yolks, meat, oysters, liver, wheat germ, soy, pumpkin seeds, shrimp, and mussels.
These foods are a great source of Zinc, which is important for hair tissue growth and repair.
Cereals like Total or Multigrain cheerios have not only zinc, but also iron and other essential vitamins (B in particular) to replenish the hair follicle when they need it most…in the morning.

Longer Hair – Chicken breast, lean red meats and fish, beans, yogurt and skim milk.
Calcium and protein are both essential nutrients for hair growth.  Many dairy products are not only a great source of calcium, but also contain the protein rich ingredients whey and casein.

Lean meats including chicken, fish, and red meats contain the most easily absorbed iron, which are essential in providing oxygen to the hair follicle.
Beans are a great vegetarian source of protein and also contain iron and zinc.

In addition, these are some common hair “super foods”. They serve multiple functions that are great for all aspects of your hair.

Salmon – Salmon contains not only B-vitamins and protein, but also selenium which strengthens the hair strands.  Lastly it’s the best source of omega-3 fatty acid, the scalps favorite nutrient.

Citrus Fruits – Foods high in Vitamin C such as grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, and lemons help form collagen on the hair follicle. This keeps the strands strong and healthy which in turn promotes optimal growth.

Keep in mind, if you decide to add some of these foods to your diet, you won’t see the effects right away.
